Your IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique numerical label assigned to every device connected to the internet. It serves two primary functions: identifying your device on the network and indicating your approximate geographic location to web servers you connect to.
When you visit a website, your IP address is automatically shared with the server — this is how the internet routes information back to you. There are two versions in use today: IPv4 (e.g., 192.168.1.1), a 32-bit format with about 4.3 billion possible addresses, and IPv6 (e.g., 2001:db8::1), a 128-bit format created to solve IPv4 exhaustion with virtually unlimited addresses.
Your IP address can reveal your ISP (Internet Service Provider), approximate city or region, country, and timezone. This information is used legitimately for content localisation, fraud prevention, and network diagnostics — but it also means websites and services can track your rough location without your explicit permission.
Most residential users have a dynamic IP address that changes periodically — your ISP reassigns it from a pool. Businesses often pay for a static IP that never changes, which is required for hosting servers, VPNs, and certain business services. If you use a VPN or proxy, our tool will show the VPN server's IP instead of your real one, which is the intended privacy benefit of those services.
